The many faces of the scarf

Nine classic styles for our three silk scarves

A silk scarf is rarely loud. It whispers. It is the small gesture that elevates a white shirt to something new, or the warm detail that ties an entire ensemble together. At Flora Danica Denmark, we have always believed that the right scarf finds its place all by itself – whether it is around the neck, around the wrist, or simply tied with care to the handle of your favorite bag.

In this guide, we have gathered nine of our favorite styles – three for each of our three sizes. Think of them as starting points, not rules. The finest thing about silk is that it never falls exactly the same way twice, and that it rarely requires more than patience and a soft knot.

THE SMALL SCARF

53 × 53 cm – the playful one

The small scarf is the French, the youthful, the playful choice. It is not the size that carries the outfit – it is the detail that finishes it. Keep it simple, and let the color do the work.

01.  The Parisian neckerchief

Fold the scarf diagonally into a narrow triangle and roll it up tightly. Place it snugly around your neck and tie a small, firm knot in front – or shift it slightly to the side for a more carefree expression. This is a style that suits a white shirt, a black turtleneck, and a sharp blazer equally well.

02.  The V-knot

The classic feminine style: Fold the scarf diagonally into a triangle and drape it softly around your neck, so the point falls over your chest in a delicate V. Pass the ends behind your neck and tie a small knot at the back – or tuck them discreetly under the scarf so no knot is visible. This style complements an open shirt collar, a simple white T-shirt, and a sleeveless dress, adding softness and focus around the neck without dominating the outfit.

03.  The bag accent

Tie the scarf around the handle of your favorite bag – whether it is a structured shoulder bag or a softer everyday model. A single twisted knot with loose ends adds movement, color, and personality. It is the classic detail that turns your bag into the one everyone notices.

THE MEDIUM SCARF

70 × 70 cm – the versatile one

The most versatile size in the collection. The 70 × 70 has enough proportion to showcase a large pattern, yet is still light enough to wrap around the neck, hair, or waist without appearing voluminous. It is the scarf that many of our customers reach for first.

04.  The classic neck scarf

Fold the scarf diagonally into a large triangle. Place it over your chest with the point downwards and pass the two ends behind your neck. Tie them loosely at the back – or bring them around to the front and let the knot rest asymmetrically on your shoulder. A timeless style that suits a wool coat in winter and a simple linen dress in summer.

05.  The Grace Kelly hair scarf

Fold the scarf diagonally and place the triangle over your head. Bring the ends down under your chin and tie a soft knot – or bring them around to the nape of the neck and let a small knot adorn the top. Wear it with sunglasses, a low bun, and a clean lip; it is purely iconic and always on the right side of classic.

06.  The bow

The classic feminine knot, known from Yves Saint Laurent’s pussy-bow blouses and one of the most timeless ways to wear silk. Fold the scarf diagonally and roll it softly into a wide band. Place the band around your neck so the ends hang down equally in front, and tie a soft bow – preferably slightly asymmetrical, so it falls naturally and comes to life. This style complements an open shirt collar, a simple knit sweater, and a blazer, adding feminine elegance to even the most understated outfit.

THE LARGE SCARF

90 × 90 cm – the dramatic one

The voluminous size. The 90 × 90 has enough fabric to function as clothing in its own right – as a full neck scarf, as a light shawl over the shoulders, or as the true star of the outfit. It is the scarf you reach for when you want to feel the silk and let it speak.

07.  The voluminous neck scarf

Fold the scarf diagonally into a large triangle and drape it loosely around your neck so the point falls softly in front. Pass the ends behind your neck, bring them back to the front, and tie a soft knot – or tuck them into the folds of the scarf. It is the classic Parisian style: warm, voluminous, and infinitely elegant under an open coat.

08.  The shoulder shawl

Fold the scarf diagonally and let it rest lightly over your shoulders as a shawl. It is the perfect style for a cool summer evening, an outdoor dinner, or a long Saturday on the terrace. Choose a color that elevates the outfit – preferably in soft contrast to the palette of your clothes, so the silk is allowed to catch the light.

09.  The tie knot

The menswear-inspired style that always surprises. Fold the scarf diagonally into a large triangle and roll it up tightly into a wide band. Place the band around your neck so that one end hangs longer than the other, and tie the ends just like a classic tie knot – end over end, up through the loop, and down through the new knot. Pull gently to adjust and let the ends fall softly in front. Keep the knot at chest height and not tight around the neck like a necktie. This style suits a white shirt with an open collar, a masculine-cut blazer, and a simple vest – androgynous, refined, and unexpectedly feminine all at once.

Finally

A silk scarf has an ability no other accessory has: It changes every time you put it on. The way you fold it, knot it, and wear it makes it yours. At Flora Danica Denmark, we simply want you to find your favorite style – and for it to be allowed to follow you.
